Cougar Creek Pedestrian Underpass

Canmore, AB – 2010

Lombard North Group was commissioned to design the landscape architectural portions of the pedestrian crossing and trail system in Canmore. Encompassing over half a kilometre, including a pedestrian underpass below the Trans-Canada Highway, the trail system creates a safe and efficient link between north and south Canmore.  Along with providing conceptual drawings which were used in public consultations, Lombard North Group also provided construction supervision of the landscape architectural work related to the pedestrian underpass and trail system. Lombard North worked as a sub-consultant to Associated Engineering.

Wildlife Overpasses and Underpasses, Banff National Park

Banff National Park – Current

Lombard North Group has been involved in the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway from the east gate of Banff National Park to the B.C. border for more than 20 years. Stretching over 85kms and crossing numerous wildlife movement corridors, the twinning of the Trans-Canada Highway has provided the unique opportunity to create new structures that safely connect mountain habitats with the adjacent Bow River valley. Working with Parks Canada wildlife biologists and the distinctive mountain environment of Banff National Park, Lombard North has assisted in the creation of new fully landscaped animal crossings that fit seamlessly into the environment.

Trans Canada Highway Twinning Project

Banff National Park

After more than 20 years of environmental planning, consultation and design, an additional 20 years of construction, and more than 55 individual project sites, it is nearly impossible to adequately describe the vast scope of landscape architectural elements that have been integrated into the Trans Canada Highway Twinning project in Banff National Park.  Landscape architectural enhancements including both traditional techniques and a variety of innovative experiments and new approaches not previously tried in Canadian mountain environments.  Experimental development of slope modification and restoration treatments to mitigate visual impacts, new soil development programs, and special features to accommodate and protect wildlife, have all set new precedents for other regional ecological designs.  The landscape architectural design for the TCH was based on principles of environmental sensitivity, rehabilitation and conservation while enhancing the overall visual experience for the visitor, truly making this “No Ordinary Highway”.
